Our Clustr Map

Our Clustr Map

On our Hello page, we are now starting to receive some comments from readers of our blog from different corners of the world.

So far we have heard from Mrs Wilson in China and Elana’s grandfather in Wales.

We know that Noah is somewhere in the United States and we would love to hear from him as well.

And, there is someone in California who likes to visit quite regularly.

Is there anyone else out there who reads our blog? If so, introduce yourself and let us know where you are.

The Great Wheelbarrow Challenge

Julia and Dayna listening to their teammates

Julia and Dayna listening to their teammates

Today we were asked to assemble two new wheelbarrows that are to be used in our vegie garden.

I decided to make it a team challenge and chose Noah and Dayna as the two captains. They then chose three other team members who had the characteristics they thought would best help them.

The boys team (Noah, Declan, Tom and Jordan) started in a rush and quickly found themselves in the lead. That was until they realised they had put the handle on upside down. The girls (Dayna, Chloe, Julia and Elana) worked slower and more methodically and, like the tortoise, looked to be the good bet.

But, experience paid out in the end and the boys were able to finish their wheelbarrow, depsite not even following the instructions. The girls wheelbarrow is now on the classroom floor, in pieces, waiting for me to fix!

While it was a fun activity, there were many interesting things we learnt. For example, I learnt that some students will complain when they are asked to sit and relax outside, in the shade, on a beautiful summer’s day. I also saw some wonderful examples of good teamwork and poor teamwork.

What did you learn (post your answer in the comments)?

Summer Learning

Over the Summer the new Drysdale Library will be playing host to some very interesting new events. I would encourage all of you to get there over January to grab some books so that you keep the momentum up from this year. It would be a shame to go backwards over the holidays and start Grade 6 on the back foot.

Jackson, Chloe, Robbie and Declan (Vincent was absent)

Congratulations to Robbie, Vincent, Declan, Jackson and Chloe who were all nominated for leadership positions for next year. They all presented speeches to the Grade 4 and 5s and were very impressive. Mr Barry was “very proud” of the nominees as they “presented with a sense of responsibility and acknowledgement of the importance of this new role.”

The successful candidates will be announced at assembly on Monday and we wish all our 5K representatives the best of luck.

Story Time!

Christmas is often a time of excess. Lots of food, lots of presents, lots of wrapping paper, lots of decorations, lots of lights, etc, etc. As we have looked at in Economics, we cannot sustain this level of consumption.

Your challenge is to write a short Christmas story that tells the message of “less can be more”.

As an extra challenge, I would like it set around an Australian Christmas. This will help those in the Writers’ Club generate interest from overseas readers.

Australian Slang

After looking at some Aussie slang yesterday, it is now time to go and research it a little further.

All the words and sayings have originated from somewhere. Understanding where they came from is a great history lesson in itself.

Follow the link to this site and click on the Aussie English Guide. Choose one item from either the Abbreviations, Australian history, Australian versions, British dialects (words from Britain), Indigenous languages, Similes or Values & attitudes.

In your English book (or Writing book if it is full), prepare a report on where your word or phrase of choice originated from. Illustrate your work as well.

Then, and only once you have finished your work, have a go at the True Blue Aussie Quiz.

Queenscliff Music Festival

Mr Percival

Mr Percival

On Friday the Grade 5 and 6s boarded the train and headed to Queenscliff for a free concert to open up the Queenscliff Music Festival.

Although the concert was short, there were some fantastic acts.

Post a brief review of your favourite (or least favourite) act. Be sure to include some information about them (which you can find here) and what you did/didn’t like about their act. Some of the acts might not be listed, so you may  need to use Google to find out some more about them.
